Review: Design Wizard - Create Impressive Designs Quickly and Easily

This image was made with a stock
DW photo and text added. I uploaded the
semi transparent DW logo.
If you create any kind of content, product or service online or off, whether you're a social media influencer, running a small business, writing a blog, making online video, or any number of other activities Design Wizard may be the cloud based graphics app for you.

What is it?

Design Wizard speeds up the graphic design process by giving you a library of pre designed templates, you can customize, suited to almost any situation.

The process is simple. Choose a template size suited to the type of graphic you're designing. For example a Facebook Page Banner image or a Youtube Channel page image. Select a design along the lines of the style you're going for, then tweak and customize the design with your own text and/or graphics.

There are templates for almost every conceivable graphic design situation from Facebook cover pages right through to DL print flyers and more.

Templates for both digital and print applications.

All of the templates and any images in Design Wizard's library are licensed for commercial use, so you're free to mix'n'match as much as you want without fear of any copyright infringement. You're also able to upload your own fonts and images, and create your own custom palettes for even more flexibility.

Video Too

Not just a still image graphic editor, Design Wizard also has short video templates that you can customize with text and other images. Templates are limited to one video clip. Currently you can't upload your own videos to the site.

Sharing Options

All of your finished designs, including videos, can be downloaded to your computer, or shared directly to many of the social media sites you're probably already using.

What does it Cost?

A basic (Apprentice) account is free and gives you access to everything but you're limited to 15MB of storage for your uploaded images, and you'll need to pay to share your Premium images and template designs if you use them. (There is a selection of totally free content to get you started).

Paid accounts start from US$9.99 per month giving you more upload storage space and includes Premium content per month up to a specific credit value. Neither paid account gives you credit to download video content which costs US$19.99 for HD quality ($4.99 for a lower quality version) across all accounts.

Design Wizard gave me a month of free upgrade to their Pro account so I could better review the site (though I must stress this is not a paid review, all opinions are my own).

The Design Wizard Studio.

Would I Recommend it?

A more practical example of an online advertisement I created
for my etourist Skateboards store. The deck and drawing of
a girl are my images, everything else is Design Wizard.
As an image/graphics composition tool Design Wizard is easy to use, has plenty of flexibility for customization, and will certainly speed up the design process.

If you typically use a lot of stock images and like the convenience of being able to customize a template instead of starting from scratch (though you can certainly do that too), Design Wizard does what it does well.

Being cloud based means you can access your designs from any computer, which is great if you're a multi-device nomad like me.

Despite being able to search the extensive template library (which you can explore without an account here) using keywords, I found it a little difficult to find templates that suited my needs. Not because the designs aren't great, all of the ones I saw were top notch designs, but because of the way the templates are organized.

So much of design starts with a feeling or a style you're going for over the actual subject matter, and then you want to coordinate that over all your marketing materials. It would be useful if Design Wizard sorted its library into styles and design sets i.e. the same designs across different templates for different situations.

On the plus side, Design Wizard will allow you to switch a template to a different canvas size whilst retaining all the elements of your design. Meaning you can rearrange everything to fit the new format. However, if you don't have an eye for design your rearrangement may not look as polished as the original, professionally designed template.

If your preference is for video templates Design Wizard may be a little too pricey for what they offer.  At this stage their video clip library just isn't deep enough and the $19.99 pricing in my opinion is too steep for HD downloads of about 15 seconds of video. It is nice to have the video templates as an occasional break from static images, but, if you plan to use video a lot,  you can get better value on sites that specialize in video templates with much more flexibility and the ability to upload your own clips.

I created this video advertisement to promote my etourist Skateboards site.
With only six stock skateboard videos and no option to upload my own clips
I'm not sure Design Wizard is the best value for video ads.

Overall I think Design Wizard is a very useful graphics composition tool that I would recommend as a static image design/composition tool.

I like that the free option still gives you access to everything, making it great for someone who can't justify a subscription but is willing to pay for individual templates as needed. The paid accounts seem like good value for power users who rely on stock images in all their marketing materials.

The site certainly lives up to its tagline of creating impressive designs quickly and easily. The user interface is easy to learn, and if you are struggling, there are short video tutorials that will definitely give you a good start.

If you need graphics quickly, or you don't have the time to learn complex design software, Design Wizard may just be the application for you.

Comments

  1. It sounds like this could be very useful for beginners or businesses who don't have the time to learn graphic design. Youtubers might really love this.

    1. Would be good for all of those. Essentially anyone who wants to fast track the design process.

Eight 2D Animation Apps For Your Phone or Tablet Mobile Device

M obile productivity apps have become so capable that they can be great alternatives to their PC/MAC equivalents or serve as great tools in their own right when you're away from your desk. While some apps simply mimic their desktop counterparts, others offer well thought out, touch-friendly interfaces that are easier and more fun to use. Every so often I check out what's available for 2D animation for Android devices, since that's what I use, that can complement my workflow with Reallusion's Cartoon Animator 5. Some may be available for Apple devices as well. Below I've listed six free (F) apps (with optional paid (P) upgrades) on the Google Play Store that you might want to explore. Some are just fun apps on their own while others may be useful as part of your workflow on bigger animation projects. Not all are exclusively animation apps and could be used on any production. JotterPad (F/P) The name JotterPad makes this sound like a notepad application but it's ...

Inochi2D - Free Open Source 2D VTuber Avatar Rigging and Puppeteering Software (Part 1)

Inochi2D Creator - Free Open Source VTuber Software. If you've been looking for a way to live perform as a 2D cartoon avatar on camera, whether it be for a live stream or for pre-recorded content like educational videos, then VTuber software is a low cost (or even no cost) option worth looking into. In my previous post, How to Become a VTuber - 2D and 3D Software for Creating and Controlling Your Avatar , I took a brief look at the relatively new but completely free and open source Inochi2D  which I thought showed great potential for my own needs of creating a live performance character rig for my own TET Avatar that I use for all my promotional materials. While it is possible to live perform my character using Cartoon Animator itself, Reallusion's MotionLive2D capture system isn't great - with lip sync in particular. More importantly though, I can't exactly teach people how to use Cartoon Animator if I'm using Cartoon Animator to control my Avatar. What is Inochi2D...

XP-Pen Artist 12 (2nd Gen) Pen Display Drawing Tablet Review - Portable and Robust Quality Ideal for Sketching on the Go!

XP-Pen's Artist 12 (2nd Gen) Pen Display Tablet. I've been looking for a more portable drawing solution for a while to work with my Samsung Galaxy Tab A, 8 inch, Android tablet, which is why, when XP-Pen invited me to collaborate on an animation project, I asked about trying their Artist 12 (2nd Gen) Pen Display Drawing Tablet . Does It Really Work With Android Devices? Having heard many of XP-Pen's mobile drawing displays could be connected to Android devices I, incorrectly, assumed wide compatibility. Unfortunately this isn't the case. There is a list of specific Android devices that work with XP-Pen's Pen Display tablets and none of them are any of the three Samsung devices I own. XP-Pen could definitely improve the compatibility of their displays with more Android devices if they're going to promote that as a feature (or make it more clear to check their device compatibility list before you buy). Also note the additional USB-C to USB-C video cable, needed to...

LTX Studio (Beta): AI-Powered Visual Storytelling, From Script to Screen in One App.

LTX Studio can generate consistent characters across storyboard panels - even if one character is a dragon! W hile text to image, and text to video (and image to video) AI tend to be getting a lot of the press, the real exciting aspect of generative AI implementation is how it can be used to speed up creator workflow. Being able to realize your creative vision in a shorter length of time can lead to more ambitious projects. Particularly if you're a team of one, with a very limited budget, but you one day dream of creating your own epic animated feature film. LTX Studio (beta), a new 'all-in-one' AI film making tool, is not going to let you realize that dream from a single text prompt but, by bringing a bunch of generative AI technologies together, the developers have created a one platform workflow that can help anyone rapidly visualize and deliver a story from initial idea to finished film in days rather than weeks (depending upon how ambitious the project is). Even bette...

Review: Animaker - 10X Better than other Online Animation Video Making software (#DIY)... or is it?

Animaker's bold claim, right on its homepage is that it's  10X Better than other Online Animation Video Making software (#DIY). Also featured on their homepage is a cool promotional video that's dynamic, full of charming lip synced characters, with high quality animation that matches perfectly to the story being told. If I could make anything even half as good with their studio, I'll at least buy that they're better than most of their competitors. Let's see if they live up to their tagline 'Animated Videos, Done Right!' Animaker is a flash based, cloud animation studio application that gives you access to an entire library of thousands of characters, props, backgrounds, sounds and more, to create almost any kind of 2D animated video. In fact they make the bold claim that theirs is the largest animated library in the world of any similar online application (it's not... or if it actually is, it's not as versatile as other comparable librari...

Tokkingheads - Make Anyone's Head Shot Talk with Artificial Intelligence

I'm increasingly fascinated by how artificial intelligence systems are being incorporated into more creative applications like visual effects, A.I. generated art, and particularly the development of human sounding voices that can interpret dialogue with more human intonation. Tokkingheads , by Rosebud AI is an interesting application available as a mobile app in both Apple and Play stores, as well as a browser based desktop version.  The simple premise is to upload a headshot image of any person (or use one of theirs), record yourself speaking anything, and then the A.I. will work out how to animate your image saying those words. There's the additional option of filming yourself speaking those words (or you can use one of their videos) and the A.I. will add the movement of your head and face into the mix to 'puppet' your image. The final animation is kind of like a budget light, deep fake video, except this was created in seconds and is relatively impressive with the ...

Moho 14 Released - Still the Best 2D Animation Software for Indy Animators on a Budget

Moho 14 Released. Regular readers know I am a Reallusion, Cartoon Animator advocate through and through. Hands down I would recommend Cartoon Animator 5 first over Lost Marble's Moho 14 to anyone who is just starting in 2D animation, is a team of one, or just needs to animate as quickly as possible. However, feature for feature, Moho is, arguably, the best 2D animation software for the rest of us who can't justify a Toon Boom Harmony , or Adobe Creative Cloud subscription (and even with their applications Moho is very competitive on features). You can get started with Moho Debut for just USD$59.99 which is a cut down version of Moho Pro but it still has the most essential features needed for 2D animation. While Moho Pro is a whopping USD$399.99 (Cartoon Animator, which only has one version, is just USD$149.00) upgrades to new version numbers come down to a quarter of the price at USD$99.00. Even though Reallusion just released features like Motion Pilot Puppet Animation and...
