The Perfect Format for Independent and Solo Animators - YouTube Announces 'Shorts Series' at #MadeOnYouTube 2026

Over the last few months, as a considerable number of YouTube Story Time Animator channels have fallen prey to YouTube's somewhat aggressive AI algorithm, demonetizing, content watchdog, something new has been announced that independent and solo animators should pay attention to.
At the recent #MadeOnYouTube 2026 event, where a host of new features for the platform were announced, one that really caught my attention was 'Shorts Series', which follows in the wake of another new feature, 'YouTube Shows'. Watch the announcement in the video below.
Shorts Series, Ask YouTube, & Creator Protection - Made On YouTube
YouTube itself has become the number one streaming platform in the world and is increasingly watched on large screens in people's living rooms. As such YouTube is pivoting more and more to features that improve the large screen experience.
Short form, serialized dramas have become a thing on TikTok, and YouTube has noticed. Where YouTube Shows is designed for serialized, long form content (perfect for binging on a big TV), Shorts Series is the equivalent in the short form space.
With the maximum length of a YouTube short (in square (1:1) or vertical (9:16) format) being 3 minutes it's the perfect format for solo and independent animators (basically anyone with limited resources, production budget, or team) to build a following in people's homes. Think 'family viewing'.
Before there was YouTube and Streaming Services family viewing created some of the biggest shows on free to air TV (just called 'Television' back in the day). The Simpsons became popular worldwide through people's living rooms.
While there is certainly a lot more competition for eyeballs today, there is something of a shift back to shared viewing on a big TV or home theater. Given any solo or independent animator can have free access to the number one streaming platform in the world, Shorts Series is a fantastic opportunity to build a family audience.
I know this may be met with cynicism from some established story time animators given YouTube's recent monetization changes, and their aggressive AI watchdog, seemingly having it in for adult animation (the key problem seems to be the AI deciding kids might mistakenly view 'not for kids' content just because it's animated), but it is possible to be edgy with 'family entertainment' too. The Simpsons were considered to be edgy back in the day.
That aside, for the rest of us, I think it is a great time to start an animation channel that isn't exclusively for kids but doesn't exclude them from watching either. Getting your Shorts Series into people's living rooms is one of the strongest audiences you'll ever build. Maybe your episodes can become a weekly ritual viewing experience.
It's worth thinking about.
