Ben 10 Alien Force and Toon Creator

Ben 10, Alien Force fans have been able to create their own Ben 10 cartoons via Cartoon Network Asia's GoAnimate powered Toon Creator for some time now. (Note that if you're a fan of the cartoon Chowder you can also make Chowder cartoons too).

I'm not a particular fan of Ben 10 Alien Force. In fact the show used to annoy me as I always seemed to catch the end of it when I was regularly watching Batman, The Brave and the Bold on Saturday mornings. However I do like the way the characters are drawn in that more mature, some-what Anime influenced, style.

I had heard that Toon Creator was only accessable to people in Asia so, being in Australia, I wasn't sure if I could even open a free account in order to use the site. Thankfully I could. I'm not sure if it's still limited to certain geographic regions? The best way to find out is to simply try and sign up.

If you've used GoAnimate's Studio (or even DomoAnimate's Studio) then you'll be right at home in Toon Creator. Everything is virtually the same and you'll have no trouble finding your way around.

I'm not that familiar with the characters of Ben 10 Alien Force but with a bit of research I discovered that Ben (in the green jacket) is the groups leader and has the ability to change into various powerful aliens through a watch like device known as the Omnitrix.

Gwen is Ben's Cousin who has the power to manipulate natural energy - not sure how she got these powers though?

Kevin (in black) is a former nemesis of Ben who has reformed. Half alien and half human Kevin can turn his body into any solid substance he touches. He also has a secret crush on Gwen.

Ordinarily I'd give you some behind the scenes information about my animations but with this there's really not much left to tell. Instead I'll give you my thoughts on Cartoon Network's Toon Creator.

It's important to note that Toon Creator is firmly targeted at kids in their early teens and younger. Unfortunately because of that it's heavily monitored and controlled almost to the point of stifling creativity. Your cartoons will be checked for appropriateness before going public.

Strangly enough on Toon Creator the 'fart' joke is inappropriate (as I discovered on my second animation, Something in the Air below.

See the original version here. Yet on DomoAnimate (also targeted at the same age groups) farts are a key part of Domo's character.

I can certainly understand the need for keeping the content 'kid safe' but in order to do it, just like DomoAnimate, the site won't let you upload custom anything. Top that off with no audio samples being provided from the actual Ben 10 Alien Force cartoons and no other themes you can mix with Ben 10 and Toon Creator is very limiting indeed.

On the flip side, being so limited does encourage users to be really creative with the props and backgrounds they have. Often people will use props in really unexpected ways.

Unfortunately the sound effects and music available to use in your animation aren't quite so flexible in finding creative alternative uses. You either have to settle for lame sound effects or just make the best of what you can with a music track.

You'll notice in my third animation, Time, below the same lame crashing sound that I used in Ben Makes Dinner for an explosion noise.

My final comment about the site is... why oh why can you not comment on animations or user profiles like you can with GoAnimate? It's enormously difficult to connect with other people who use Toon Creator however if you find your way to the Toon Creator Forum, you'll find a pretty healthy community.

I just don't understand. If they have a forum, why can't they allow you to comment on animation and user profile pages?

All up, you'd have to be a die hard Ben 10 Alien Force (or Chowder) fan to stick with Toon Creator. It's the only place you can make your own cartoons with those themes. However if you're just interested in mixing things up and making a wide range of animations with many themes - including your own custom work - GoAnimate would probably suit you better.

    What an exhaustive review of the Toon Creator! Great post TET. You still managed to create pretty funny animations despite the limitations. We will hopefully continue to grow the content in the Ben 10 Alien Force and Chowder themes as we go. It should get more interesting Still, of course we understand the limitation not being able to upload anything. It's for kids. So it takes a safe approach.

    Personally, I love Chowder and we really enjoyed animated that little guy over here. It's a great funny cartoon with good humour. You should check it out. :o)

    I started with Ben 10 because the characters are quite different to anything on GoAnimate but I will be trying out the Chowder theme soon too, Nicolas.

    I'm disappointed to learn that Toon Creator is so region specific that people outside the Asia Pacific region can't even watch my embeded videos above. I'm aware that's probably due to regional licensing agreements but it's disappointing and will probably mean I don't stick with the site until it becomes much more world wide access.

    It appears to have closed very recently for reasons I don't know why. They certainly didn't send any kind of message out to members (or if they did I never received it).

Infinite Monkey Theorem Animated Short - Part 5

Scene 2 from my storyboard, Infinite Monkeys. Work on my Infinite Monkey animated short is definitely back on track since my last update and my previous part 4 post . To get things moving again I've decided not to spend time creating a final draft storyboard that uses all the actual props and characters. This is something that you'd generally do if you were planning to show the storyboard to someone else for feedback. At this point I'm not planning to do that so I'm going bypass it and create and animate each scene as I go, saving a bit of time.

Inochi2D - Free Open Source 2D VTuber Avatar Rigging and Puppeteering Software (Part 2 - Inochi2D Session)

In part one of my deep dive into the free VTuber software, Inochi2D , I focused mainly on Inochi2D Creator, which is used for rigging your character avatar in the correct file format for use with Inochi2D Session, the puppeteering part of the software. Prome AI Sketch Render Tool - Your Tradigital Clean Up and Colorist Artist for Character and Background Design

Wonder Unit Storyboarder - Free Storyboarding Software for People Who Can (or Can't) Draw

Wonder Unit Storyboarder.  As an independent and solo animator I'm always tempted to try and skip storyboarding my animated shorts because they're usually only single scene sketch comedy type jokes. As a result I have many unfinished projects that kind of petered out due to having no clear finishing line. Storyboarding your productions, no matter how small, gives you a step by step guide of every shot that needs to be completed (no planning shots as you animate). It also allows you to create an animatic that gives you a rough preview of the finished production. Reallusion's Cartoon Animator 4 Released - Not So Crazy Anymore

If you're the kind of 2D animator that needs to get high quality work out fast then you should be taking a serious look at Reallusion's Cartoon Animator 4 because that is the key feature that informs almost everything this application is capable of. Formerly known as CrazyTalk Animator 3, the release of Cartoon Animator 4 (CA4) reveals an application that goes out of its way to make high end 2D puppet rig and motion graphic animations easier to create quickly, and as intuitively as possible. That's not to say there isn't a learning curve but another great strength of CA4 is that you won't get lost in a sea of icons, tools, menus and more. The initial user interface is less complicated and more logically laid out than one may have used to put together a powerpoint presentation.

How to Become a Virtual YouTuber (VTuber) - 2D and 3D Software for Creating and Controlling Your Avatar

Young TET VRoid Avatar in VSeeFace. In a previous YouTube video I demonstrated how you could use a webcam, Cartoon Animator and its MotionLive 2D Facial Capture system to create a virtual avatar that you could perform live during a live stream. Unfortunately the motion capture performance of this system is very average to say the least, and is even more expensive if you want to add hand motion capture via a Leap Motion Controller . This lead me down a rabbit hole of seeing what other solutions are out there, where I bumped into the world of the VTuber or Virtual YouTuber (creators who puppet and voice an on camera avatar instead of appearing on camera themselves). Specifically VTuber software, which has been a real eye opener for how expensive and far behind Reallusion's upper body motion capture system actually is.
